For those of you who are not opposed to marking up your equipment, you can add whiteout or white paint in set intervals to your pole starting at the base of the handle.
For anyone not willing to blemish their equipment, try small orthodontics style rubber-bands (will fit most standard poles) and seat them tightly on your pole at intervals.
Note: When entering your fish into contests this can be an easy way of laying your fish out on a measurement stick while getting a picture.
